Conservative Senedd member for Pen-y-Bont Bro Morgannwg, Andrew RT Davies, has called for more urgency in increasing the frequency of train services on local lines.
The Vale of Glamorgan line that connects Barry, Rhoose, Llantwit Major and Bridgend is currently served by one train per hour in each direction, with the previous Welsh Government confirming that half hourly services were set to begin by the end of the year.
Now, the new Plaid Cymru Deputy Minister for Transport Mark Hooper has not committed to a timeline, stating that “delivery will be dependent on fleet availability and infrastructure requirements, which TFW are actively working through with Network Rail and Vale of Glamorgan.”
In response to a written question from Andrew RT Davies, Mark Hooper said “As a newly elected government, we are committed to working with Transport for Wales (TFW) on improving connectivity for people across Wales as part of a modern integrated transport network.”
“TFW are progressing plans to increase service frequency on the Vale of Glamorgan line, initially during peak times with a full uplift throughout the day delivered by next year”
The Deputy Transport Minister confirmed that a further update would be provided once plans have been confirmed.
Andrew RT Davies is now calling on the Welsh Government to make an improvement in service a “top priority” stating that “Vale residents had put up with a substandard service for years while other areas got investment.”
Mr Davies said: “Senedd ministers previously confirmed the service frequency would start to increase on the Vale of Glamorgan line by the end of the year.
“It’s concerning the new Plaid Cymru separatist administration has not kept to that timeframe.
“While other areas of the Valley Lines network have seen significant investment in rail infrastructure, the Vale of Glamorgan line has been left behind.
“Residents of Rhoose and Llantwit Major deserve more than one train an hour.
“We need far more urgency from Senedd ministers. It’s time to make it happen.”
