A Penarth man has joined his local lifeboat station after moving back to his hometown.
Nick White wanted to find a way to reconnect with his community after returning home.
After volunteering to guide visitors around Penarth's lifeboat station, he took up a year's training to become its press officer - which included a residential course at the RNLI college in Poole.
Now, Nick is preparing to go solo, after completing his probation period, which he likened to passing a driving test.
"There are so many unknowns to learn and experience, but it’s incredibly rewarding. It feels like a real accomplishment," he said.
Nick added he was inspired by the commitment of the lifeboat crew and the opportunity to engage the public with the RNLI's mission.
"I wanted to give something back and was amazed by the dedication of those who volunteer their time for others."
Asides promoting the RNLI's work in Penarth and the wider community, the role of lifeboat press officers involves a mix of traditional and social media skills, liaising with local newsrooms and managing sensitive information on callouts and incidents.
"The biggest challenge has been understanding how to deliver news respectfully and responsibly, especially when dealing with sensitive situations,", he said. "There’s a self-imposed pressure to get it right because what we do carries real gravity."
"This role has deepened my appreciation for the importance of every volunteer’s contribution. It’s a reminder that even the smallest actions can have a significant impact."
He also praised the training he received for the job, adding: "The RNLI provides fantastic training sessions that really challenge your thinking and equip you to handle difficult scenarios. The trainers share their wealth of experience, which has been pivotal for me."
One of the highlights of Nick's probation was attending the charity's 200th anniversary Thanksgiving service at Westminster Abbey.
"It was profoundly humbling to be surrounded by so many lifesavers who have been so selfless. Seeing our Helm, Jen, involved in the ceremonies made me incredibly proud."
