The Vale of Glamorgan Council has been reaccredited under the White Ribbon scheme, a national programme recognising organisations that commit to challenging violence against women and girls and promoting safer, more respectful communities.
The accreditation, confirmed this month, acknowledges the Council’s organisation‑wide efforts to address harmful attitudes, support staff to act as allies, and embed principles of respect and equality across its services. White Ribbon UK requires accredited organisations to demonstrate long‑term, practical action — including staff engagement, leadership commitment and policies aimed at preventing gender‑based violence.
White Ribbon, now 34 years old, is a globally recognised campaign symbol encouraging men to take an active role in challenging violence against women and girls and calling out harmful behaviour before it escalates.#
Cllr Lis Burnett, Leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council, said the reaccreditation reflects ongoing work rather than a completed milestone.
“We are delighted to have been reaccredited by White Ribbon UK. It is an important milestone and reflects our continued commitment to creating a safer, more respectful and more equal Vale for everyone,” she said.
“Violence against women and girls has no place in our society, and men and boys play an instrumental role in challenging the attitudes and stereotypes that enable violence to flourish. This accreditation is not the end of our journey. We remain committed to working with our communities and partners to build a culture where respect, equality and safety are at the heart of everything we do.”
What the Accreditation Involves
To meet White Ribbon standards, the Council has been required to show evidence of:

Leadership commitment to tackling gender‑based violence

Staff engagement, including supporting White Ribbon Ambassadors and Champions

Awareness‑raising activity across communities and workplaces

Policies and practices that promote healthy relationships and safe environments
The Council says this work will continue, with further plans to strengthen prevention efforts and encourage residents to challenge harmful behaviours wherever they occur.
By securing reaccreditation, the Vale joins a growing network of UK organisations working to reduce violence against women and girls and promote cultural change at a local level.
