Over one hundred Barry residents have stepped up to shape a £2 million a year Barry Plan for Neighbourhoods.
The successful applicants will form five action groups that will generate creative and practical project ideas to tackle the issues that matter most to people in Barry.
Local business owner and branding expert, Fay Blakeley, will lead the town centres and community spaces action group.
Chief Superintendent Marc Attwell will lead an anti-social behaviour and safety action group.
Innes Robinson, Executive Headteacher of Whitmore High School and Pencoedtre High School, will lead the skills and training action group.
Senior Community Development Officer, Sarah Cutting, will lead the health and well-being and community action group.
Founder of GlastonBARRY, Matt Blumberg, will lead the action group looking at events in Barry.
Barry is one of five towns in Wales selected to receive a major investment of £2 million each year for 10 years from the UK Government, through its Plan for Neighbourhoods initiative.
The Chair of the Barry Plan for Neighbourhoods Board, local resident and former CEO of Admiral Group, David Stevens, said, “It’s great to get so many volunteers on board to help us make the right choices for the long-term well-being of the town.”
Whilst this round of recruitment for action group members has closed, applications to join an action group in the future are welcome. An ideal group member will have personal experience and understanding of the issues the action group is focusing on, either through their personal life or through work.
The Barry Plan for Neighbourhood group says they are keen to continue to hear comments and ideas from individuals, businesses, and organisations in Barry at any time. For more information, visit www.barry.cymru.
