There'll be no more downhill derbies at Penarth's Summer Festival.
Organisers say they are unable to continue with the popular event after a man was seriously injured at last year's event, which led to the town's annual one-day festival being curtailed.
The go-kart race, which was introduced in 2010, attracted thousands of spectators to Cliff Hill each July.
Following a two-year break due to Covid restrictions, it returned to 2022 but was cancelled the following year due to stormy weather.
A statement on the Penarth Downhill Derby's Facebook page said: "It is with a very heavy heart we announce that the Penarth Downhill Derby will not be returning."
"After last summer's incident, it was no longer possible to continue with the event."
"We started in 2010 with the small idea of starting a go kart race and through the sheer enthusiasm of all those who participated and all those who came to watch it grew to become the highlight of the Penarth Carnival attracting thousands of spectators and racers from all over the country."
"We will always be incredibly proud of the event we created - boosting the appeal of Penarth Carnival, boosting visitors to Penarth and helping the businesses along the seafront."
A spokesperson for Penarth Town Council, which organised the festival, said the derby was "a longstanding favourite" which "brought immense joy and a strong sense of togetherness" for the town.
They added: "Its success is a testament to the creativity and collaboration that defines our town."
"While the Downhill Derby holds a special place in our calendar, we believe now is the right time to explore fresh ideas that will continue to unite the community and keep our events programme dynamic and engaging."
The town council said it would share details of its new events programme in due course.
