The RNLI Visitor Experience and Shop at Barry Island is set to remain a fixture on the promenade for another decade, following a successful tender submission that guarantees its place until 2036.
Opened in 2017 as the UK’s first dedicated drowning prevention centre, the Barry Island RNLI Visitor Experience has become a cornerstone of the community — welcoming thousands of visitors, supporting lifesaving work, and offering vital water safety education to families, schools, and local groups.
The announcement comes during a milestone year for the RNLI, as Barry Dock RNLI celebrates its 125th anniversary and RNLI lifeguards mark 25 years of service.
Staff and volunteers say they are thrilled to continue their work on the seafront. “We couldn’t be happier,” the team said in a statement. “We’ll keep sharing water safety advice, welcoming community groups, and supporting our lifeguards — even if that means buying the biscuits!”
The centre has become a free, friendly space for visitors to learn about the RNLI’s lifesaving mission, browse gifts, and take part in family activities.
Locals and visitors attending the Barry Island 10k or Gŵyl Fach y Fro festival this weekend are encouraged to stop by and say hello to the RNLI team.
The RNLI Barry Island Visitor Experience and Shop remains open year-round, continuing its mission to make the Vale’s coastline safer for everyone.
