St Nicholas Church in Wales Primary School has become one of only two primary schools in the Vale of Glamorgan to achieve UNICEF UK’s prestigious Rights Respecting Schools Gold Award.
The accolade, confirmed in January, recognises schools that embed children’s rights into everyday school life — from classroom practice to leadership and decision‑making. Gold is the highest level awarded by UNICEF UK.
The school has been working towards the award since 2018, securing Silver in 2022 before progressing to Gold this year.
Headteacher Miss Evans said the recognition reflects the strong community ethos at the school. “We are proud to receive the UNICEF UK Gold Award, recognising our commitment to putting children’s rights at the heart of our family school,” she said. “This achievement reflects a community where every child is valued and heard. It is down to the dedication of our pupils, staff and wider community, who bring these values to life every day.”
UNICEF assessors praised the school for creating an inclusive environment where pupils feel safe, respected and able to influence school life. They noted that children, staff, parents and governors all demonstrated a strong understanding of children’s rights and social justice.
The Rights Respecting Schools programme is used by thousands of schools across the UK, with many reporting improvements in behaviour, wellbeing and relationships as pupils gain confidence and a stronger sense of belonging.
St Nicholas’ achievement places it among a small number of schools in Wales to reach Gold status, marking a significant milestone for the village school and its community.
