Two Rescues in Record Heat as Volunteer Teams Respond to Afternoon Emergencies

Friday, 26 June 2026 09:13

By Nathan Spackman

Coastguard and RNLI Volunteers were called to two serious incidents on Thursday afternoon as record-breaking temperatures created challenging conditions along the coastline.

The first call came at 3.45pm, when crews were paged to assist a casualty suffering from heat exposure near Barry Dock. The individual was found at the top of steep rock armour with no safe exit routes. Coastguard and RNLI teams from Barry and Penarth worked together to assess and treat the casualty, providing shade and cooling measures while awaiting further support.

Due to the casualty’s condition and the difficult location, a Rescue 387 helicopter was requested to carry out an extraction.

As the helicopter approached, crews were immediately retasked to a second emergency — reports of a child in difficulty in the water near Friar’s Point. RNLI Penarth volunteers redeployed quickly, joining Barry Dock RNLI’s lifeboat crew, local RNLI lifeguards and a Bristol Port Company pilot vessel in searching the area. The child was later located safely ashore.

Teams then returned to the original incident, where the heat‑affected casualty was winched to a nearby beach for further treatment.

After recovering their equipment — and taking what they described as a much‑needed cooling dip in the sea — crews prepared their lifeboats for another potential callout at 7pm, marking the end of a demanding shift.

RNLI Penarth said the series of incidents came during an “exceptionally busy” period as extreme temperatures pushed emergency services to their limits. The team thanked partner agencies for their support and praised members of the public who cooperated by keeping slipways clear for launches and recoveries.
