Barry Amateur Swimming Club has launched its centenary year after holding its 100th Annual General Meeting at Sully Sports and Social Club in January.
While two World Wars and Covid mean there may not quite have been 100 formal meetings, the milestone was celebrated in style — alongside the presentation of Club Championship awards from November.
Chairman Heulwen Cooper welcomed a packed room and spoke of an exciting year ahead, beginning with a Centenary Celebration Evening at Barry Memorial Hall on Saturday, 18th April.
She revealed the club is currently at full capacity, with a long waiting list of young swimmers keen to join, and thanked the poolside team, coaches, volunteers, captains and committee members for their dedication and enthusiasm.
During the event, Gold medals and trophies were presented to:
Sophia Gully, Maya Gully, Mimi Williams, Isabelle Williams, Grace Fudge, Lily Cole, Mali-Rae Hale, Isla Thompson, Eva Nelson, Maisie Dabrowska, Abbie Coborn, Oscar Fudge, Jack Evans, Darcy Flynn, Thomas Desbois, Matthew Davies, Steffan Phillips, Joshua Hooper, Sebastian Marshall, Daniel Tailby and Alfie Sargeant.
Whilst Silver, bronze and participation medals were awarded to all swimmers who competed.
The event also provided an opportunity to present several special awards, including Outstanding Contribution awards for:
- Runners-up: Olivia Powell and Jacob Powell
- Most Improved Newcomer: Katie Hawkings and Jack Evans
- Novice Swimmer: Lily Cole and Oliver French
- Swimmer of the Year: Grace Fudge and Isaac Biggs
Adult awards were presented to:
- Female Club Member: Sarah George
- Male Club Member: Mark Stillman
- Loyalty Cup: Chris Benson
With a century of swimming behind them and a celebration year ahead, Barry ASC aims to continue making waves both in and out of the pool.
