Bearfield Skatepark Opens Following Community‑Led Design Process

A new skatepark in Cowbridge has officially opened, with residents, families and young people turning out on Wednesday to mark the launch of the Bearfield facility.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council, Cowbridge Town Council and skatepark designers Wheelscape hosted the event, which included music, prizes and open sessions for skaters and scooter riders. Young people were among the first to try out the new ramps and features, showcasing tricks throughout the day.

Bearfield Skatepark is one of the first projects delivered through the Cowbridge Placemaking Plan. During early engagement, the site was identified as a priority location where improved facilities could benefit the town — particularly children and teenagers.

Local young people played a central role in shaping the project. Among them was Bruno Sochovski, whose interest in skateboarding and efforts to gather feedback from fellow students helped influence the final design. Bruno worked with the Council’s Creative Communities team to ensure young people’s views were reflected throughout the process.

Pupils from Cowbridge Comprehensive School, Ysgol Iolo Morgannwg and Y Bont Faen Primary School also contributed ideas through workshops, helping Wheelscape develop a space suitable for a wide range of ages and abilities.

The project was funded through Section 106 contributions from nearby housing developments, with additional support from Sport Wales.

Councillor Bronwen Brooks, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Sustainable Places, said “This facility is a great example of what can be achieved when communities work together to shape the future of their town.

“Young people have played a central role in this project from the very beginning, helping to create a space that will be enjoyed for many years to come. The skatepark is an important addition to Bearfield and one of a number of exciting placemaking projects that will be delivered in Cowbridge in the years ahead.”

The opening marks another step in delivering the Cowbridge Placemaking Plan, which aims to enhance Bearfield and create more opportunities for residents and visitors while encouraging active lifestyles.
