Council seeks views on Future of Colcot Sports Centre and Buttrills Playing Fields

By Nathan Spackman

Residents, sports clubs and community groups in Barry are being asked for their views on the future of Colcot Sports Centre and the Buttrills Playing Fields as the Vale of Glamorgan Council begins a new round of early‑stage engagement.

The Council says no decisions have been made about the sites and has confirmed that previous proposals — including those involving housing — are no longer being pursued. Instead, the authority wants to start “a new conversation” with the community about how the facilities should develop in the years ahead.

Councillor Lis Burnett, Leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council, said “These facilities are important to the local community, and we want to ensure their future reflects what people need.

“This early engagement process gives residents, clubs and partners the opportunity to tell us what matters most as we begin to explore a new, community-focused vision for Colcot and Buttrills.”

Participation in sport and physical activity continues to rise across the Vale, particularly in football, with more women and girls taking part. While both sites already play a key role locally, the Council says the Colcot building is in poor condition, does not meet modern standards and is becoming increasingly costly to maintain. Parts of the site — including the former artificial pitch — have also been out of use for several years.

The review forms part of wider priorities set out in the Barry Place Plan, which highlights the need to improve neighbourhood facilities and expand opportunities for sport and physical activity.

As part of the engagement, the Council is asking residents and clubs to share:

  • How the sites are currently used

  • What works well and what could be improved

  • Barriers to taking part in sport and physical activity

  • What people would like to see in future

Any future proposals, the Council says, would need to reflect local priorities, improve accessibility and inclusion, and be financially sustainable. If there is strong community support, the authority may also look at potential funding opportunities to support improvements. Any detailed plans would go through further consultation.
