Loan scheme to help bring landmark Cowbridge building back into use

A landmark building on Cowbridge High Street is being given a new lease of life, with support from the Vale of Glamorgan Council helping to transform the former Barclays bank into a modern coworking hub, guest accommodation and a juice and smoothie bar.

Funding provided through the Council’s Town Centre Loan Scheme and Commercial Improvement Grants has enabled essential improvements to the property, unlocking a new future for the building and supporting its return to productive use.

The redevelopment is being led by local businesswoman Lyndsey Jenkins, founder of Cowbridge‑based creative communications agency jamjar, which will relocate to the site once work is complete.

The investment forms part of the Council’s wider efforts to regenerate town centres across the Vale, focusing on bringing vacant commercial buildings back into use and supporting high street resilience.

Cllr Bronwen Brooks, Cabinet Member for Sustainable Places, said the project demonstrates the impact of targeted support for local businesses.

She said: “It’s fantastic to see this landmark building being brought back into use and given a new purpose at the heart of Cowbridge. Projects like The Old Bank show what can be achieved when local businesses have the support to invest in our town centres. Bringing empty properties back into use not only strengthens our high streets, but also creates new opportunities for businesses, residents and visitors.”

Lyndsey Jenkins, founder of The Old Bank and managing director of jamjar, said the redevelopment aims to create a flexible, welcoming space for a wide range of users.

“Having run a business in Cowbridge for more than 14 years, I’m incredibly passionate about the town and its High Street, so it’s exciting to be giving such a prominent building a new lease of life,” she said.

“Our vision for The Old Bank is to create a place that brings people into the heart of Cowbridge – whether that’s to work, meet, stay or spend time here. The support we’ve received from the Vale of Glamorgan Council has been invaluable in helping us bring our plans to life.”

The Transforming Towns: Town Centre Loan Scheme supports regeneration across the Vale by helping businesses and property owners bring vacant commercial premises back into use and invest in their high streets.
