Penarth teacher to appear in new fly-on-the-wall S4C series

A newly qualified teacher from Penarth is set to appear in a new series, Athrawon, on S4C this Wednesday.

The broadcaster has announced the names of the eight newly qualified teachers — and the five schools across Wales in which they teach — who will feature in its new fly-on-the-wall series Athrawon.

The series, a Carlam production for S4C, will capture some of the highs and lows of their first year in the job.

Meirin Oan Evans, who lives in Penarth, is a Physics teacher at Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni, Caerphilly, in the series.

Meirin Oan Evans said: “I don’t think I’d be happier doing anything else. I’d wanted to be a teacher since I was 14, but various people advised me to do different things.

“Half a lifetime later, I’m so happy I decided to become a teacher. It feels like my fourth career, but it’s certainly the best one for me.”

Ysgol Cwm Rhymni headteacher, Matthew Webb, said: "As a school, we were happy to support Meirin and the Athrawon series as it followed new teachers on their career journey.

"It was lovely to see a series like this produced in Welsh, giving viewers an insight into the reality of school life from the perspective of new teachers, and helping to promote the benefits and the opportunities of Welsh-medium education."

"The series gives an honest and interesting insight into the life of a new teacher – from planning and teaching lessons to assessing, duties as well as the significant benefit of extra-curricular activities."

"We would like to say a special thank you to Meirin, who was so ready to welcome cameras into his classes and share his experiences of starting out in the profession. You need confidence to allow cameras to follow day-to-day school life, and we are incredibly proud of him and our pupils for being part of the series."

Llinos Wynne, S4C’s Head of Docs and Specialist Factual said: “Athrawon is an important series that shines a light on the vital work of teachers in mentoring, educating and shaping future generations. 

“The education sector is key in ensuring a flourishing future for Wales and the Welsh language, and S4C is very grateful to the schools for their cooperation on this series. 

“It’s a timely series which offers a fresh insight into the education system through colourful characters, humour, empathy and honesty.” 
Athrawon, which has received support from the Welsh Government via Creative Wales, starts on Wednesday 9 September to coincide with the start of the new school year."
