Children aged 1–5 in Barry can now receive a free Hepatitis A vaccination without an appointment, as Cardiff and Vale University Health Board opens new walk‑in clinics at Barry Hospital.

The move marks the latest step in efforts to curb the ongoing local outbreak, which has seen confirmed cases linked across several households in the town.

From 21 August, families can attend Barry Hospital (CF62 8YH) Monday to Saturday, 9am–5pm, with clinics running until Saturday 5 September.

The walk‑in option follows a strong initial response to the vaccination programme, with hundreds of parents already booking appointments after receiving text invitations from the health board.

The expanded access builds on the vaccination programme launched earlier this month, which offers the jab to any child aged 1–5 who lives in Barry or attends a childcare or education setting in the town. Children only need to meet one of these criteria to be eligible.

Public Health Wales has confirmed 11 cases since December 2025 and says investigations indicate the virus is spreading within the community, rather than originating from a single location such as a school or nursery. Young children often show mild or no symptoms, but can still pass the virus to others who may become seriously ill, making vaccination a key tool in reducing transmission.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board has thanked Barry families for their swift response, saying high uptake will help limit further spread and protect vulnerable people. The Hepatitis A vaccine provides 94–100% protection within days and has a long‑standing global safety record.

Public Health Wales continues to urge families to maintain rigorous handwashing, noting that Hepatitis A spreads easily and can survive on hands and surfaces. The outbreak remains under investigation, with health teams tracing contacts and offering targeted vaccination where needed.
