Staff and volunteers at the UK’s leading end-of-life charity are coming together to take part in a 40-hour bikeathon to celebrate the charity’s flagship fundraiser.
Marie Curie’s Great Daffodil Appeal, which takes place annually from February to March, marked its 40th anniversary this year, and the charity’s team in Wales is continuing to mark the milestone this month.
From 7pm on April 22 to 11am on April 24, staff, volunteers and supporters will be riding non-stop in 30-minute stints over 40 hours on static bikes at the Wellbeing and Support Hub at the Marie Curie Hospice, Cardiff and the Vale in Penarth.
Members of the Bro Radio team will be jumping on bikes over the 40-hour period, with Vale Breakfast broadcasting live from the Hospice on Friday 24th April, from 7 am.
The charity provides expert end of life care for people with any illness they are likely to die from, and support for their family and friends, at its hospice on Bridgeman Road and where they live. It is the largest charity funder of palliative and end of life care research in the UK, and campaigns to ensure everyone has a good end of life experience.
Fundraising also supports the charity’s free Information and Support service, including its support line which is for anyone living with a terminal illness or affected by dying, death and bereavement.
Community Fundraiser Hannah Warner-Holt, who has organised the activity, said: “We’re excited to bring all our teams together – from nursing to fundraising and everything in between – for this event to mark the 40th anniversary of the Great Daffodil Appeal.
“We’ll have people riding through the night, with the goal of keeping the wheels turning for 40 hours. It isn’t a race or spin class – people can go as fast or as slow as they like.
“Thank you to SNAP Fitness for supplying us with the bikes to enable us to do this challenge while raising some vital funds and having some fun at the same time!”
