⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - "something truly exceptional that I’d look forward to watching over and over again"
I recently had the pleasure of attending a sneak preview of Array Theatre Productions' performance of "Company: A Musical Comedy" at Rhoose Community Centre.
Based on the Broadway performance by Harold Prince, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and originally based on the book by George Furth, this production was a remarkable experience.
Opening on 21st November and running through to 23 November, the show has been a true testament to the enduring brilliance of Sondheim's work.
Rhoose Community Centre provided an exceptional setting for this production. The seating was comfortable and offered a brilliant view of the raised staging area. The venue also featured excellent amenities, enhancing the overall experience for the audience.
The staging and lighting were expertly executed, creating a visually engaging backdrop for the performers without distracting from their performances.
The slick lighting design complemented the simple yet effective staging, ensuring that the focus remained on the actors' portrayals of these timeless characters. The music and lighting seamlessly punctuated the performances, adding depth and atmosphere to each scene.
Under the masterful direction of Alana Frassinelli, the production brought out the best in the performers and made full use of the space. Frassinelli's direction was insightful and nuanced, capturing the essence of Sondheim's brilliant script and translating it into a compelling and dynamic performance.
"Company" follows the story of Bobby, a bachelor navigating his relationships with various couples in his life as he contemplates the prospect of marriage. As we follow Bobby's interactions, it's hard not to recognize similarities between the characters on stage and people we know in real life.
The production seamlessly transitions between spoken scenes and stylized, Broadway-style musical numbers that externalize Bobby's existential crisis as he decides whether a married life is his path to follow.
Paul Mellin, who plays Bobby, holds the tempo of the show and skillfully introduces the audience to an array of incredibly talented actors. The large cast performs intricate, ensemble routines with a high level of precision, bringing energy and vibrancy to the stage.
One of the standout moments of the production was the wedding scene featuring characters Paul (played by Richard Beamish) and Amy.
The diction and comic timing of Clare Jones, who played Amy, during this fast-paced, high-energy, and highly emotional moment was truly exceptional. Her delivery of the high-paced song required perfect diction, comedic timing, nuance, and delivery, all of which she executed flawlessly.
Another highlight was Bobby's journey through a perceived mid-life crisis, where he determines whether he must conform to societal expectations and follow in his friends' footsteps into a committed relationship, despite witnessing their struggles.
This exploration of Bobby's internal conflict was portrayed with sensitivity and depth, making it relatable and thought-provoking.
Paul Mellin, in the central role of Bobby, was outstanding. His portrayal provided a steady beat and allowed the audience to connect with the world of his closest friends.
Mellin's performance was both grounded and dynamic, capturing Bobby's internal struggles and external interactions with finesse. Clare Jones, as Amy, delivered a standout performance that was both high-energy and highly emotive.
Her exceptional delivery of a challenging song, marked by impeccable diction and comic timing, left a lasting impression on the audience.
Samar Small as the iconic ‘Joanne’ was truly exceptional with a commanding performance that captivated and enthralled.
The whole cast outperformed and created something truly exceptional that I’d look forward to watching over and over again.
Array Theatre Productions' performance of "Company" at Rhoose Community Centre was a stellar production that brought Sondheim's musical to life with vigor and artistry.
The combination of exceptional direction, brilliant staging and lighting, and outstanding performances made this a must-see show. If you have the opportunity to attend one of the performances, I highly recommend it.
This production of "Company" is a testament to the enduring power of musical theatre to entertain, provoke thought, and touch the hearts of its audience.
"Company" runs at the Rhoose Community Centre until Saturday 23rd November.
