Heathers returns to Cardiff this week and I finally understand why its following is so passionate and dedicated to this musical.
The audience were seen in bold and bright blazers, plaid skirts and the odd letterman jacket sprinkled in for good luck. This is a musical known for its fans and the only real way to understand why is to turn up and take part in this highly entertaining (and just a tad dark) musical.
Heathers is based on the 1989 film of the same name. It is a dark comedy following the story of Veronica Sawyer’s mission to become popular in high school and how the cool clique known as the Heathers take her under their wing, but not everything goes to plan especially when Veronica meets the mysterious new boy J.D and finds all is not what it seems. Things start to turn dark, but the jokes keep coming.

What a great cast there is on this UK tour. In this class of 2024, we are treated to Jenna Innes as Veronica, Keelan McAuley as J.D. and Esme Bowdler as Heather Chandler. A brilliant trio that refuses to let the fans down. Comedy timing, great vocals and brilliant stage presence in abundance and surrounded by an equally strong cast allowing us all to sit back and enjoy every note and every hilarious lyric. Amy Miles gives a stunning performance of Kindergarten Boyfriend and Connor McFarlane and Alexander Service have the audience eating out of their hands with their antics during My Dead Gay Son. You can tell that even the ensemble just loves performing this musical as much as the standing ovation giving audience loved watching it.
Slow motion fights executed perfectly, and hilarious American Pie style high school humor mixed with Bonnie and Clyde style romantic killings, what more could you possibly want from a musical.
This is the first time in my life where I have not wanted high school to end, and I suggest you grab your backpacks and skip on down to Wales Millenium Center now to find out why.
