St Athan Community Council has awarded the teachers and staff at the Village school a special recognition award, following a fire at the site earlier this year.
The fire broke out at approximately 11:48 am on Wednesday, 12th February, with teachers and staff helping to safely evacuate 240 people in total, with no reports of any injuries.
At the time, the Vale of Glamorgan Council's Chief Executive praised staff, saying "The only thing that mattered was that no-one was hurt. Thankfully, the professionalism of staff, who quickly followed emergency protocols, along with the swift attendance of South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, ensured this was the case."
Now St Athan Community Council has recognised the work of Teachers and Staff, awarding them a Community Award at its annual Civic Service on Sunday, in recognition of their hard work during and after the fire.
Just days after the fire, staff put in place remote learning arrangements alongside Vale of Glamorgan Council, with internet-enabled devices sourced for children who needed them. Whilst a fundraiser organised by local community members, to help support staff, went on to raise more than £2,500.
Other award winners at the St Athan Community Council Civic Awards were:
- St Athan Historical Society for services to the preservation of the History of St Athan
- Andrea Lewis for services to St Athan Library
- Cllr Derek Wilmot for services to the Council
A spokesperson for St Athan Community Council said, "Congratulations to all awards winners and we thank you for all your hard work on behalf of everyone in St Athan and the surrounding communities."
"St Athan Community Council would like to thank everyone who attended the Civic Ceremony Event. With an extra special thanks to Rev Emma Street & the Wardens of St Tathan Church and Paul Lewis St Athan Community Centre"
