Several Vale schools have recieved new fleets of bikes, helmets, and storage facilities, after the Council secured Active Travel Funding.
The Council says the initiative aims to boost cycling confidence among pupils and staff, supporting National Standards Cycle Training and broader efforts to promote active travel to and from school.
As part of the scheme, repair kits and adult bikes have also been made available to allow schools to maximise the impact of the equipment.
Five schools are benefiting from the scheme:
- Albert Primary School, Penarth
- All Saints Church in Wales Primary School, Barry
- Cogan Primary School, Penarth
- Peterston-Super-Ely Primary School
- Y Bont-Faen Primary School, Cowbridge
Each of the schools involved has developed and submitted an Active Travel School Plan, which outlines commitments to increase walking, wheeling and cycling among pupils.
Some of the schools have also taken part in School Street closures, where roads outside the school gates are temporarily closed during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times, to help reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality, and encourage more active, healthier journeys to school.
Cllr Bronwen Brooks, Cabinet Member for Sustainable Places, said: “We’re delighted to support these schools through Active Travel funding. Providing bikes and the right infrastructure helps remove barriers and gives children a safe, fun way to build their confidence in cycling.
“These schools are leading the way in encouraging greener, healthier journeys, and we’re proud to support their commitment through practical measures like this. It’s all part of our wider strategy to make walking, wheeling and cycling safer and more attractive across the Vale.”
Vale of Glamorgan Council says the scheme forms part of its wider climate and wellbeing goals, supporting families to make more sustainable transport choices and helping young people to develop lifelong healthy habits.
